This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Thanks again for a load of great photos Mark. The B-17 (44-85818) was a drone controller at the Crossroads nuclear bomb tests in 1946. (Note APS-10 radar installation used by DB-17s.) She was reclaimed in 1949 after service at Eglin; more info needed on reasons for her specific fate.

What's the story behind this photo? The
Balkenkreuz on the wings don't look quite right. The Allies tended to
get the dimensions, placement, etc. of insignia wrong on captured aircraft. Does that mean this is this a captured 190?

If anyone is wondering what the inscription on the nose says, it reads TOJO EATS SHlT
Brilliant!

Great name, but I'm glad they didn't add nose art...

Hey Mark, has anyone P.M'ed you complaining about the "dirty pictures"?
I wish I'd have taken some pictures of my Tiger moth, after we got back from Geneseo, to add to this thread. She was filthy!
Picture taking a quart of used motor oil and stirring in 3-4 cups of dead bugs. Now apply liberally!

Yuck!!!!
Andy
Oops! sorry Dave
Fixed & won't happen again.

Andy, you own a Tiger Moth and yet even you write its name incorrectly as Tigermoth? Been reading too many media reports? That's how they spell it. Sorry mate, it's a pet peave I have, just like when they write Airforce. Agggghhh!! It's Air Force ffs. Otherwise the RAF would be the RA. The RNZAF would be the RNZA. The USAF would be the USA... I have made this point to a few journalists too, and drummed it in.

Could be wrong but I wonder if what looks like oil smears on the ends of the wings is actually condensation from flying at altitude for a real long time. Came in a few times on our Hercs after very long flights at altitude and the wings were sweating when we landed from being exposed to the cold air temps for long times. You could see what was cold and what wasn't on the wings. Usually the fuel bladder areas had the frosted look. On dark wings that could give it the dirty/oily look.
