Hello!

I'm thinking of buying a SIGMA 28-300mm F3.5-6.3DG lens for my 350XT. I think that with such a lens I'll be able to avoid switching lenses at airshows.

What do you guys think?

Ollie:

I am not familiar with nomenclatures unless a brand name is stated; what kind of camera is the one you own?

If you can afford it, go for the same brand name for the lenses as it is your camera's.

Canon or Nikon lenses are more expensive, but the quality of the optics is superb.

My experience with Sigma lenses was not a good one, with lots of vignetting and strange red streaks appearing on the photos for unexplained reasons that had nothing to do with film developing .

Saludos,

Tulio

Same as yours Tulio, Canon 350XT.

And the Canon lens doing the same thing is 2200$.

The Canon lens does have one definate advantage over the Sigma in that the Canon lens is stabilized.

So my Rebel XT is a "350XT" elsewhere?

Price is high, but the quality of the optics is well worth it.

I saved for most of last year until by the end of November, I was able to purchase my 70-200 IS, and I can honestly say that I am pleased with the results.

A one-chance shot comes out great, while similar shots with the Sigma lenses in the past, were an iffy proposition.

Good luck with your choice!

Tulio

Oh, I'm not buying anything as I won't burn 420$ up and 2200$ is way too much (for now).

I'll just keep pesting against the dust.

Cheers!

Ollie, even if you don't change lenses you'll get dust on your sensor, it's just something you have to put up with.

Read http://www.cleaningdigitalcameras.com/, it's got some very clear tips for keeping your sensor clean. There's no need to send your camera off and pay a fortune to get a clean sensor, you can do it yourself.

On the subject of lenses, any lens with such a wide range is going to be a compromise at both ends of the range. You're better off using two lenses to cover the same range.

Cheers Rob, I'm already using a blower, but I can't get rid of some of the darn dust in there.

I need to move to the next step once I find a store with suitable equipment...

Ollie, I ordered my kit over the web. Unfortunately you can't get the sensor spatula tools in the UK (because the companies over here would rather you paid £2 a shot for disposable ones that aren't as easy to use).

Another couple of places to look are http://www.pbase.com/copperhill/ccd_cleaning and http://www.intemos.com/

A rocket air blower is the first thing to use and if that doesn't shift the dust then try the spatula/Pecwipe/eclipse fluid method. If this doesn't work after a couple of goes then the Intemos solution can shift crap that other methods leave behind.

It scares you a bit the first time you do this but you'll get used to doing it.

Rob
