This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

The last picture is the ultimate warbird “gee wiz” lineup of aircraft in my opinion...Spiteful, MB-5, and Blackburn Firebrand to start, then scattered about there are Ta-152’s Ar-234, F1-190 and Do-335’s and other exotica. Note the Bristol Brigand, Fairey Swordfish and All of the 88 series, the 88G, 188 and 388. All of them the zenith of European piston engine power aircraft...what a hangar (and Reno Stable) that would make today. Use the Ju-188 for crew transport And a Ju-290 to ferry spare engines and tools!
As for the P-38 I don’t have my notes with me, but I believe the Italian Marked one was used in Italy for a short time before inferior Fuels damaged both engines grounding the plane. She was then repaired by the Luftwaffe who maintained American aviation fuel stores and with replacement engines flew with the Circus Rosarius. Heinz Stapfer was the researcher who published the best books on the subject, and they are the go to on these aircraft. Great pictures!

You beat me to it. Where else are you ever going to see those three beautiful airplanes sitting together?

Of course there is one missing from the pics at RAE Farnborough, the ultimate piston fighter, the dH Hornet, searching for more pics, sure enough, it was there, just out of shot.

Flat, is the Hornet behind the...whut is that in the rightmost row, an Avro Lincoln? My eyes are at the limit.

Not the best pic is it, but yes you are correct on both counts, with a Mosquito behind the Hornet

So, how about the story of Guido Rossi that's at the link in the OP? Apocryphal?
It's a satisfying read, but whenever there's so much detail and it seems a little too perfect (painting his girlfriend's portrait on the bait aircraft?) I am skeptical. I think I've read the story before, maybe in Martin Caidin's "Flying Forts" but I no longer have my copy.

I, too, remember the story from Caidin's book. The link below describes it as a myth, along with another story related to the YB-40.

What is the large, elliptical winged transport (?) in the foreground of that shot?

Not a transport, but a bomber - the Vickers Windsor.

The bare metal P-38 is that of a defector who surrendered the plane to the Germans and joined up with them.

Of course, technically it's not a P-38

What is the large aircraft above the Ju-52? "R" code, center top of photo. Is that a loading ramp?
