Spitfire pilot attacking Rommel's car

Sun May 21, 2006 9:51 pm

Does anyone have the name of the Spitfire Pilot who attacked Rommel's car in Normandy?

Apparently Jacques Remlinger and some other, but I know that in one of the books about Canadian Spit pilots, there's mention of one.

I don't remember his name, I'll check tomorrow and report back if nobody had found it!

July 17, 1944 602 Squadron CO J.J. "Chris" Le Roux and a section of his Spitfires shot up Rommel's staff car, resulting in injuries to Rommel.

Col Mort Magoffin of the 362nd FG in a P-47 and Lt Harold Miller (?) of the 359th FG in a P-51 also were credited with straffing Rommel.

Wow....Rommel must have soaked up a sh*tload of bullets.

That, or the combat claims are inflated.

I would not belive it unless rommel had recalled a tail number. Bar room flying.

Thank you all for giving me the intell you have. Its interesting that there can be many claimants and by now I would think they could have narrowed it down by film date and planes on patrol in the area etc.

Fact of the matter is that wartime kill/battle damage claims are highly subjective and very inaccurate.

Even today, in OIF and OEF, battle damage inflicted from aircraft isn't documented with 100% accuracy.

One thing about the Rommel attack is even the German's claimed he was attacked by a Spitfire, but as for who was behind the controls is anyone's guess.
