One a success the other a failure. Strange to see a P-38 attempting to be a tail dragger, even if it's photoshopped to look like one


Lockheed P-38F-1-LO Lightning. "Tail" ended up as a "bar" for the pilots of 59th FS, 33rd FG in Tunisia in spring of 1943.

The Short Stirling had twin tailwheels. Very strange looking.

Looks photoshopped to me. Lot's of blur around the tailwheel...plus there is no way the structure of the bottom end of the vertical stabiliser has enough structural rigidity to handle anything but a quick move around the field. And evben then!

Curtiss had planned a twin tail wheel variant for their Commando to be known as C-46H. The contact was cancelled on V-J Day and none were produced.

Always I wince when I see the Burnelli so in need of some lovin'. But then I go and see they are working on it like beavers. The new engine cowls look like those from a later B-25, differing from the vintage photos of the CBY-3. Even reading about that particular acquisition in their restoration updates I am not sure. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. Man it is looking totally great. And now, after this brief thread hijack (not a skyjack because we'll never fly the sole example, right?), back to twin tail wheels.... of which I propose the SNCASE SE 100

Per Scott Thompson (aerovin), Burnelli Aeronautical Corp. bought PBJ-1J BuNo 35884/N102J in 1961. There's no further record of that plane; maybe he bought it to get the engines for the CBY-3 and scrapped the rest? Wonder if there are any other B-25 bits in it.

If we look carefully at the picture, we notice that there are modified areas.
Under the nose ... and under the tail !!!
