VWoC corsair mishap july 3 2019

Wed Jul 03, 2019 1:33 pm

There are reports that the VWoC Corsair left the runway this morning and the pilot was taken to hospital. There ia no word on injuries to the pilot or damage to the aircraft, but we can assume it wont make it to TOM this year.

Eegghhh! Hope the pilot is ok. Either way, I know which ever pilot was flying.

Hoping all the best for the pilot involved. Very glad to read that it was non life threatening injuries.

Edit: The Ottawa Sun has reported that the pilot was John Aitken, and is described as having suffered a broken rib and broken nose. https://ottawasun.com/news/local-news/p ... QKNeluiGhw

My Airport Ops Guy senses are tingling. Usually runways are designed with a Runway Safety Area (RSA) to help catch aircraft in the event of an overshoot, undershoot, or excursion from the runway. That ditch looks awful close to the runway from that video--unless I miss my guess. The whole point is to reduce damage to the aircraft in case of something like this occuring.

Regardless, glad he's okay, and they'll be able to patch the airplane up in time.

Wishing John a speedy recovery.
I always hate hearing about mishaps like this.

Best wishes to all the folks at Vintage Wings.

Could have been a worse outcome but Im glad that John is ok .
Unfortunately this is yet another mishap for VWC . They have been plagued with problems since their beginning . At this point it may be a good idea to ground the remaining fleet and carry out a thorough review of their operations before something even more serious happens. Sometimes its a good thing to stop , step back , bring in an outside group and carry out a very thorough RCCA Investigation. It will pay off in the grand scheme of things.

You must be thinking of another organization. I’ve been following the VWOC since its start in the early 2000’s and I don’t recall there ever being any previous mishaps or accidents.

Yes, there have been mishaps.

On the other hand we flew the "5000 Miles In A Spitfire" program last summer without a single snag -- after landing in YND at the end of it I could have carried right on to Halifax.

And we have brought the message of "Educate, Commemorate and Inspire" to millions.

No one has had more wonderful, amazing aviation experiences with John than I have. We have shared so many ramps, aircraft, and formations that I can't count them. No one could send him more positive wishes and vibes than I am right now.

We wish John a speedy recovery and aircraft can be rebuilt...

VWofC has done a wonderful job of bringing history to life and presenting it to the public.

*Re these comments [*]Usually runways are designed with a Runway Safety Area (RSA) this applies generally to runway overruns depending on the category of the runway and not to the sides of the flight strip!
