I have seen some more detailed pictures of the aircraft than what is online at the moment .
Without getting into a lot of details , the damage is quite extensive and there appears to be a rather large split in the airframe just aft of the cockpit on the stb side . Along with all the other damage to the wings tail etc this aircraft while salvageable, will require a major rebuild. This is a major setback for any collection and very unfortunate timing as there were rumblings that is was going to be put up for sale once the bugs were all sorted out.

My Airport Ops Guy senses are tingling. Usually runways are designed with a Runway Safety Area (RSA) to help catch aircraft in the event of an overshoot, undershoot, or excursion from the runway. That ditch looks awful close to the runway from that video--unless I miss my guess. The whole point is to reduce damage to the aircraft in case of something like this occurring.

Airports don't care about airplanes!

Chino did a drainage improvement project some years back and placed a significant ditch next to the runway. Bob Pond ran his Hellcat off the side and flipped over shortly thereafter. Luckily he wasn't hurt and the aircraft wasn't damaged too terribly.

I was there with the B-17 Sentimental Journey, not only did it end up on it's back, it happened to hit a piece of farm equipment that tore open the vertical fin from the tip to the fuselage just forward of the rudder hinge line. I remember the chino bunch saying that had that happened to the Zero there would not be much left to salvage, they were very much against that ditch.

Any word on the condition of the pilot and his prognosis for recovery?
