Dover's AMC museum 'most boring' in Delaware?

Tue Jul 09, 2019 10:07 am

Looking through this, I found that I’ve seen more than a few of these. I strongly disagree about the Dover AFB museum being boring, as it’s pretty darned good: https://www.farandwide.com/s/worst-tour ... er+U.S.%29

It really is a great museum. Based on the comments in the slideshow, I doubt that the reviewer has actually visited there. Some men you just can’t reach.

I wouldn't bother giving that website the traffic, just farming page views for ads.

I'm sure there is something WAY more boring in Delaware than this museum!

It is a fantastic museum, with a strong group of volunteers and staff. Now it is primarily trash haulers and re-fuelers, which is appropriate given the history of Dover (they also have a F-101 and F-106 to commemorate the Interceptors that were based there, a B-17 inside and a An-2 for some reason). The C-141 and C-130, C-5 (main cargo deck) are open almost every day, and the C-133 and others open by request. Other open cockpit days on a monthly basis.

It might be boring for folks like Mrs.Sandiego89 who thinks the C-130 and C-133 look the "same", but for the rest of us a definite stop. Well done Dover

I agree fully.
My uncle's 'theater made' knife he carried as a transport pilot in the Pacific is in their collection there.

Some idiots who run websites try to be smarta$$es, thinking they're the next Jerry Seinfeld.

There is a lighthearted book on roadside attractions went out of it way to be anti-military. In discussing the NMUSAF's B-70 they say "it's the only one of its type not to crash".
If course they don't say only two were built and one crashed after being hit by another airplane.

If people can post some pictures from the museum I'll create an entry in our museum list

You also have to bear in mind that there is a certain demographic which needs to be told/entertained. So any museum where you might need to walk somewhere, read something or just look and appreciate the items on display will be seen as 'boring'. Some folks have no imagination.

What's really impressive is how rare many...if not most...of the types are.

C-133, C-124, KB-50, and gosh how many C-141As are left?
Even the "Hanoi Taxi in Dayton is now a "B".

Of course these days even recently common types; C-131, C-54, Connies and (D)C-9s are rare.

Nothing boring about that extensive collection, especially when internal access is available for so many of the planes.

I agree when it comes to folks like us, who appreciate rare and well-preserved/displayed aircraft. But that said, I do wonder if the general public would consider a museum dedicated to airlift to be a little boring compared to the 'gee whiz' combat and NASA goodies tucked away not too far south in the DC area.
Let's face it, airlift isn't as exciting as fighter aircraft.
Still, they do have a great B-17 there!
Don't misunderstand the above, I love the museum and I used to go there all the time when I was in the region!
