Seems to me that I read somewhere that the airplane was a better troop glider than most purpose built troop gliders. At least in terms of flight performance.

My take is pure cost / payload vs a Waco!!!! Not even considering the following:
- Time to build
- One shot use

Plus they needed all the transports they could get...... to tow the gliders
