SBD aircraft (Bu# 54088) damaged by enemy anti-aircraft fire. Photograph released June 18, 1944.

The SBD was from VMSB-245 and was damaged by 90mm AA during an attack on heavy AA on Emidj Island, Jaluit Atoll on 17 Jun 44. The pilot was 1st Lt. J.H. Mathias, he and gunner where uninjured. Plane was damaged beyond repair and stricken.

From the look of the damage and all the mud on the wing, I 'd hazard a guess that the Spitfire was damaged on the ground by artillery or strafing (Bodenplatte?).
