Last F4U Arrested Landing?

Thu Sep 19, 2019 6:33 pm

Just watching the movie "Flat Top" on Youtube and watching Corsairs making deck landings. Does anybody know when the last time a Corsair would have landed aboard a ship was? I'm guessing it was the Aeronavale about the time of the Suez crisis. Sure would be neat to watch one make a real arrested landing at an airshow sometime!

Both France and Argentina operated them into the '60s, so it's very possible that the last arrested landing was well after Suez (1956).

I didn't realize that the Argentinians flew them. That's interesting... thanks.

Yes, and they had at least one carrier, too. And operated some of their F5U-5Ns in the "modern" USN Gull Gray/White scheme. But I have no idea when their last actual trapped Corsair landing might have been.

The ARA Independencia, ex HMS Warrior, served with the Argentinian navy between 1959 and 1970. It was replaced with the ARA Veinticinco de Mayo as the Independencia could not accommodate the F9Fs. The Independencia carried F4Us, SNJ-5s and S2Fs during its time with the Argentinian navy.

That first video is pretty entertaining. Especially when they launch the Texan. Looks like a naval museum taking a joy ride.

Remember the IMAX film"Flyers" in the 70s-80s?

I know they had a Corsair on a carrier, but I don't think they did an arrested landing...but I could be wrong.

Am I imagining it or wasn't there a post in WIX a few years ago about filming this scene? If I remember it right, this was all staged and the Corsair was put on a cart and pulled along the carrier deck to simulate a gear up landing.

Thanks Mike! I was beginning to wonder if I really remembered that thread. But I didn't think it was that long ago, 11 years.
