Where to find an H-21 dataplate?

Mon May 06, 2019 6:04 am

Hello WIXmind,

Where would you look on an H-21 for a dataplate or other means of identifying the airframe?

The plate is usually visible from the outside.
Look through the glass, roughly where the left hand pilot's feet would be.

There are actually 2 data plates for the Piasecki H-21 Workhorse/Shawnee
1 from Piasecki
1 from accepted USAF

Circa 1991 a civil H-21 showed up at Chandler Municipal airport (not the infamous strip on the reservation).
The data plate said it was ex-RCAF. I later heard it was going back to Canada for logging.
Anyone know more?

AlohaDave,
I can't quite read the details from the plate photo that you posted.
Assuming its 51-15886, can you please tell me the manufacturer's serial number and acceptance date?
Thanks,
Andy

Hi Andy,
Like you I am having trouble reading the tail number, however if it is 51-15886 the details are:-

Completed by 02/10/1954
Accepted on 08/31/1954
Delivered on 09/10/1954

This was under Contract # AF-12881
Project # ARD-4H-83

I am presently researching the history of all Piasecki/Boeing-Vertol H-21s constructed and through this forum I hope to establish additional information, particularly with regard to those that became civil registered after their service careers.

You may expect further postings with requests in due course and I will of course try to answer any queries that others may have on this topic.
