"Project Sock" 1943 ...

U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II in the Pacific theater used modular pontoons for just about everything. So they tried this attempt at a mobile airfield. Turns out it was determined it probably couldn't handle sustained wave pounding at expected forward deployment locations.

Interesting, thanks for posting. Looks like a SNJ lower right.

Similar to the Seaplane bases planned for the mobile base concepts for SeaDart, Tradewinds, SeaMasters, etc.
