That Bell YMF-1 is super cool. I didn't even know it existed. Apparently, that plane was put into an intentional spiral during a test and got stuck because the rudder locked. The pilot and co-pilot decided to bail out and cut both engines. The way the plane was designed the co- pilot had to jump first and upon exiting hit both his legs on the tail freeing up the stuck rudder. He broke both his legs. The pilot then had control and decided to control landing in an empty field and walked away.

Crashed 16Mar50 on Harold Yeager farm near Spraggs PA after running out of fuel in overcast on flight from Otis to Greater Pittsburgh; a/c was attempting to land on highway; 2/Lt Donald T Lynch suffered cuts and bruises. It appears that the aircraft was being ferried to the ANG as the 33rd was converting to F-86As at this time.

Aircraft recommended for reclamation 12Apr50

(The F-84 of 2/Lt John D Ostler (47-1524) also ran out of fuel and crashed a mile away, near Route 218 on the farm of Earl Spragg; Ostler suffered a dislocated thumb and a leg injury)

Regarding the F-86 with the gear handle circled "up". Is there any chance that the pilot selected gear up when leaving the prepared surface? One of the photos seems to show the gear partially down - or partially retracted. Just a thought.

Mark - the originals of those P-51 mustang crash on the salt flats are up for sale on eBay - along with a few others but the asking price is way to steep. Anyway -I love the Crow (?) hanging out in the shade of the wing!
