I think I actually have a movie poster for this flick. And yes, that is the weirdest looking Phantom I have ever seen!

Indeed! And it looks like the Phantom on the movie poster has a few chin mounted guns!

Perhaps there is a good reason I had never seen or heard of this movie, and I will sit through about anything for a few airplane scenes....

I actually found this movie on DVD several years back and bought it... It was worth it for the little bit of cool Sabre flying in it...

It's supposed to be a Porsche 917/10 as raced in the Can-Am by George Follmer, Mark Donohue etc. It looks better in the film as I recall.

I remember watching that movie as a teenager when it came out. The movie stunk, but I enjoyed the Sabre scenes even though Burgess Meredith was a little too old to be flying a jet fighter. :D

I remember the movie from when I was small and it wasn't bad if you were 8 years old. That said its pretty tired for viewing today.

A great history piece as to where the culture thought things were going on the eve of the Reagan years....

Interestingly it takes place in 2011, and California is a refuge for race cars and machines in the movie.

The car is a replica probably built with original spare bodywork of a Porsche 917/10 as stated. the last recorded sale I have was for chassis 003 in 2012 for $5.5 Million to a Californian...perhaps to be used in a future escape from Cali to Utah? Regardless, the replica may have been assembled by Vasek Polak racing or some other concern from spares and parts lying around. I would dearly love to find out more of what happened to the car and its parts. The 917 is a fearsome car in its early iterations, the shorter chassis Can-Am cars are even more scary in some ways but have better aero. (so they killed fewer drivers!) Amazing cars.

And don't say Burgess is too old to be flying a jet fighter, he was 73. There are people that are too tall to be flying a jet fighter....

One of two Sabres used in the movie. The second was the sole Canadair Sabre 3 which at the time was in Ontario. It was used for static hangar shots.
