....was a small hook on the centerline float to snag the skid. This kept the aircraft in a steadier position for the crane.

In the first three photo posts here, that hook can be seen quite prominently in several photos..one of which an Arizona sailor has his hand on it as the bird is being loaded on the cat. Also a couple of photos of the gunner catching the rig and hooking up to the crane as well.
