Hi

First post here and would like to enquire please of anyone can tell me anything about a Boeing B-17 fuselage and nose section that was noted as being at Universal Studios, Hollywood in September 1988. Was it a real example and if so does anybody know if its still there or maybe if known perhaps has it moved on elsewhere by now?.

Any information welcome.

Maybe this one?

It's a mockup left over from "The Mission", an episode of the series Amazing Stories. I shot this on a tour of the Universal backlot in 1986.

Chris

Thank you for that my initial thoughts were that it might have been a mock-up, oh well that solves that mystery!.

Does anyone have any photos of a B-17 set/mosckup of the cockpit?

They must have used something like that for the 12 O'Clock High movie and series.

I was just curious if there was a studio long shot of the setup

The film and TV show cockpit and rear section were, for many years, hanging in a bar in Greeley, CO. The bar closed and the parts were sold. They ended up in Georgia with Don Brooks, but I have heard that they are now with Bruce Orris in CA. Anybody confirm that?

Interesting. There was one, Season 1, 12 O'Clock High episode where the camera (always to the left of the pilot looking towards the co-pilot) pans down You see Lansing's feet on the rudders and then it moves left to the nose compartment.

There were interesting little things to watch on the Season 1 shows. Whenever Lansing was "communicating" to someone outside his plane, his left thumb always mashed down on the yoke PTT button....

And Lansing always demonstrated positive transfer of control when he and the co-pilot exchanged control of the plane.

I read somewhere that Lansing took flying lessons.

Last I heard, it was back in the US being prepped for that 8th AF miniseries that has been stuck in development hell (was going to be aired by HBO, now nobody knows where/if it'll be aired or even filmed now)...

It was announced that "Masters of the Air" was moving from HBO to the new Apple TV+ streaming service back in October 2019. Seems like things are finally moving ahead.

Per the fifth edition of Final Cut, as of 2017 the forward fuselage of s/n 44-83387 was being combined with the aft fuselage of B-17F 42-30681 (wreck recovered from Alaska) to build a static display by Mr. Orriss and the California Air Heritage Foundation.
