Scott,

I believe the CV was firing it's 5" guns which caused the unsecured plane to do it's dance.

If it was in combat then accidents happen, if it was in training then someone has some explaining to do :)

I think that that was on the Enterprise and it was bouncing due to nearby bomb strikes in the water. Not 100% sure, but that is what I have read a couple of different times! There are other images of that SBD hanging on the side of the carrier.

Sounds right. Imagine the ship heeling over 15-20 degrees in evasive maneuvers while being concussed by nearby bombs. That would definitely be the kind of things to cause an unsecured airplane to pogo-stick itself over the side.
