I actually wrote an article on the aircraft of the Chaco War for the CAF "The Dispatch" publication some years ago. It was difficult to get images we could use, I remember. Another lesser known conflict I have studied is Nomonhan also known as Khalkhin-Gol between the Japanese and Soviet Union shortly before, and actually after, the outbreak of World War II. One of the Crecy Classic paperback, called "In the Skies of Nomonhan; Japan versus Russia May-September 1939" by Dimitar Nedialkov, 2011, is one of the few that focus specifically on the air war there.

Do you go further back in South American wars? "Andean Tragedy; Fighting the War of the Pacific, 1879-1884" by William F. Sater, 2007, is an interesting read. I also do naval history, FYI. Thanks for participating - I've enjoyed our "visits".

Phil65 - I'm not sure I follow. Did I post an image of this before? Anything is possible. Thanks.

I think Phil was trying to post #8 with your photo to the top of the "new" page. When we hit quote the pic as an attachment doesn't come with the post quote.

Ah, I see, I think, Phil65. Did you find this online where I think you did or do you have the same book? :D If so, you want to do the ID? All the best.

Randy

P.S. OK, now I'm more confused.

Ah2 or achoo! So I guess we will just wait to see what turns up for #8. I'll tell you what was going on in the back of my mind (some at least) when we get an ID, or not! Stay safe and well. Randy

I thought this one might be easy, as I used it before as a "mystery plane" on my old website. Aircraft #8 is the Berenznyak-Isayev (also known as Bolkhovitinov) BI-1. The image is from page 37 of "Under the Red Star; Luftwaffe aircraft in the Soviet Airforce" by Carl-Fredrik Geust, 1993.

The BI-1 was the first rocket-powered fighter built in the Soviet Union. Most of its structure was of wood covered with fabric, while the rocket engine was a Dushkin D-1A, which in its later versions provided 1,100 kg of thrust. First powered flights were in early 1943 and later that year a top speed of nearly 560 mph was recorded. On 27 March, 1943, on the seventh flight, the BI-1 crashed, killing noted test pilot G. Ya. Bakhchivandzhi. A replica of the aircraft is on display at the museum in Monino, Russia. The link below has more information on the design.
