Wreck of USS Nevada (BB-36) located

A veteran of two world wars, Nevada was present for some of the most significant actions in US naval history, including Pearl Harbor, D-Day, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Operation Crossroads. She was the only American battleship to get underway during the Japanese air raid on the Pacific feet of Dec 7, 1941 and survived two atomic bombs blasts despite being designated as the "bullseye" for the post war nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll.

I think it was Beached, not sunk...

The original press release from SEARCH and Ocean Infinity has the date correct, but somehow Yahoo! introduced that odd "July for December" error when posting the story to their site. They've been asked to fix it. And yes, "beached" is not the same as "sunk."

Reporting aside, I still think it's a remarkable achievement by the explorers to have found the wreck under more than 15,000 feet of ocean, giving us the chance to reconnect with tangible remains from a ship that witnessed (and shaped) some truly momentous events in our history.

Agreed. At my fantasy museum, she'd get a berth alongside USS Enterprise (CV-6) .. which would, in turn, have its hangar deck stuffed with every major type of carrier-based aircraft to serve in WWII.
