I read a book years ago called "Herman the German". It's about a guy who grew up in Germany and became a mechanic.

Eventually he worked for the AVG in China and put together a Zero that was flyable. He comments that the plane was hand crafted. Not many interchangeable parts with regard to airframe.

Yep Gerhard Neuman - Herman the German.

He lived in the next town over from me and if I has pushed it with a friend I might have scored an introduction - I read the book before I knew he lived close by.

But I didn't push it
