It looks like the top, lead plane on the right may have had a couple of bombs somehow collide and start burning/smoking. Just my best guess on what is shown. Over to bomber veterans and experts.

Randy, those are smoke markers being dropped by the lead plane, indicating to the other planes to release their bombs. They started doing this later in the war for better spread and accuracy on their targets.

I believe those are Smoke Markers.

If you look closely you'll see the stacks of bombs dropping slightly behind the smoke trails.

Thanks for posting Mark. My father-in-law flew with the 483rd BG that cohabitated with the 97th BG
