NASM jobs are rare and close quickly.

They are required by law to post for jobs. They close quickly because the already know that they will be hiring so and so’s nephew. It’s how Gov’t works. On topic...if you’re interested in getting a gov’t job, nothing would be better for your application than a large cash donation to an “organization with influence”

Having been on the posting side of the process.....I have seen that before. There is a minimum timeframe the job posting has to be posted. Once the timeframe is met, the posting is pulled (Closed) and assuming applications have been received, the app review process will start. If none of the apps meet the minimum job quals requirements....the posting will go back up to get more apps. Now....if so and so's nephew (or whomever) is the target of the job opening.....the job posting will be written to include specific job qual requirements geared towards the nephew's (or whomever's) quals. Hence...and often times, the nephew (or whomever) just so happens to be "the best qualified" for the job. Yes....sometimes that is the govt way.

Well, certainly not a glamorous restoration job... Crating and moving junque from one location to another. I suppose one thing could lead to another, after maybe 4 years, or you will just get laid off.

NASM has at Udvar-Hazy added a storage module to the restoration end of the facility, with two further extensions planned.

So, maybe this new employee is a start to the transfer of the remaining Garber collection to Dulles.

Anybody know more about this, and a timeline for the movement?

My contact at the NASM told me yesterday that what is left at Garber will in fact be shipped to this new structure at Udvar-Hazy. The modules already on site have been used to store aircraft removed from the building on the mall while the construction is taking place there. I also learned that non aviation related items owned by the Smithsonian and in storage around the DC area will be stored in the modules as well. I do not have a timeline for any of this but I assume it will go one for quite a few years.

What is at Garber deserves great care and respect, and such appreciation can come with a good education (higher academic or otherwise). I have been shown through Garber many times, sometimes by some guy who happens to be at hand, and appreciates my interest. Universally, these people have shown reverence for everything that they point to.

Frankly, and I am speaking as a teacher, that kind of respect for knowledge does not generally come from a high school or Bachelor's degree.

Conversely, there's a lot of people out there with Master's who can't figure out how to open a toolbox or not stab themselves with a screwdriver. They need an (above average) A&P with sufficient wood butchery skills to build crates & reverence for the items. There's probably 30 people just at Chino who could do the job. I probably know close to 100 people who could do it & none of them have a Masters.

Which brings up an interesting point.. How many people in the warbird resto biz have an (applicable) Master's?..
