Just got my newest issue of Classic Wings. In it is a very interesting project that I knew nothing about. A Thomas Fausel and Todd Grothause have on its gear a fairly faithful reproduction of the Fw-190D. For engine using a Allison V-1710-111. If the picture is any indication looks fantastic. Anyone else heard of this exciting project? FHC I know has one, but won't fly it. Would be really cool to see a long nosed Fw-190D.

I remember talk of another Flugwerk taking the Allison route a couple of years ago. Good the hear that it is almost finished.

Didn't Yagen have on in the works at one time?

The Flugwerk Fw-190D is still at the museum, and he also owns the wreck of an original. It think the Flugwerk is getting a Jumo 213 eventually.

From memory there were three Allison Doras built and only Tom Blair's (now Yagen's) example was known to be run - here's a too-short video:
https://youtu.be/gHF-LEr_IWg

I'd heard the Yagen machine ws getting a German engine but I can't remember where from, maybe Kermit Weeks' visit to Vintage V12s. I expect others can provide more clarification as my Flug Werk knowledge isn't terribly on point.

The Tom Blair example was the only airframe complete with the Allison. The other two Flugwerk Fw-190D were only airframes if I recall. One of those two is with the Collings Foundation (I think), and the other is with a Fw-190D project in Europe.

Yagen has a Jumo for his, and that engine is planned to be ready for testing sometime this year.

This aircraft was also the subject of an article in the December 2020 issue of "Flugzeug Classic". Interestingly, both in "Flugzeug Classic" and "Classic Wings", the Flug Werk c/n is said to be 990019. This goes against what has been widely reported online for years (the c/n 990019 has always been associated with Dan Kirkland's Flug Werk Fw-190A, N190DK). The project got started in 2011 and features an Allison V-1710-111 overhauled by Yancy. It was interesting to learn that the engine mount was included in the kit, designed/built by Flug Werk for mounting the Allison, while the exhaust had to be custom-made in order to route downward and out through the more/less stock cowling. The prop was manufactured by MT of Germany, and Kühler Crass in Coburg, Germany designed the radiator system. The aircraft's first engine runs were performed last April, and it sounds like had there not been a pandemic it very well could have been flying by now, it is very close. The project incorporates some parts of the tail wheel mechanism, the tail unit trim and some structural elements from the original Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-8 W.Nr.170375 (by mention of which, I assume it will be registered with that identity).

The "Flugzeug Classic" article, with several photos of the aircraft, can be read here (it just required a quick sign-up for a free trial): https://www.yumpu.com/news/document/gna ... ad?page=68

Digressing a bit:

Do any of these articles state (or does anyone know) if part-owner Tom Fausel has a connection with Bob Fausel, legendary test pilot with Curtiss?

Neither states that, Dan. However, this is part of what is written in the German magazine:

"Thomas Fausel lives in Switzerland and is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, but did not get into aviation until 2000, which he still practices today. In doing so, he developed a penchant for perfection, which, according to him, borders on "the manic". This is how he got to know Todd Grothause, who has been active in the warbird scene for a long time. Together they have already restored two Cessna O2-A and O2-B observation aircraft from the Vietnam War over the years."

If you view the photos in the "Flugzeug Classic" magazine, you can tell that it wasn't of the most importance in having it look authentic, but it certainly has the cool factor. I will be curious to find out how it flies. From what I've read, all of the Flug Werk Fw 190s completed thus-far have their own unique flying characteristics/qualities, with some handling noticeably better than others.

Perhaps this view could be replicated down the road. Not literally of course!!

On 7 March 1945, Sqn Ldr Evan Mackie of No. 80 Squadron RAF engaged a Fw 190 D‑9 in a fierce dogfight near Enschede. The latter aircraft was probably W.Nr. 400247 "Black 4", flown by Unteroffizier Otto Salewski of 10./JG 26. While climbing up to 8,000 ft, Mackie, who was in Tempest NV700/W2*A, had initially spotted the vapour trails of six to eight Focke‑Wulfs above him at about 15,000ft. Continuing to climb through patchy cloud, he and his squadron intercepted the "Doras" at around 13,000 ft as they were diving down to attack other Tempests of No. 122 Wing RAF. Mackie singled out Salewski, chasing him vertically down to 3,000 ft. For the next five minutes the two fighters duelled over the flat ("We were both leaving almost continuous wingtip trails" as Mackie put it), open countryside between Plantlünne and Rheine until Mackie, aided by the arrival of two more Tempests from No. 274 Squadron RAF, fired a one‑and‑a‑half‑second burst, with 30 degrees of deflection, from approximately 200 yards. Flames tailed back from the Focke‑Wulf’s cockpit and it crashed "in a mushroom of smoke and flame" north of Rheine near the village of Schüttorf. Salewski perished in what Mackie considered to be the hardest encounter of his career.

It sure would be nice to see a flying Tempest Mk.V, I'm not sure how likely that is after Andy Salter retired leading Kermit to crate up his project.
