I recall seeing one in Texas, circa 2003, approaching it from the rear, at first I thought it was a Navion with a clear canopy.

One of the WIXers in Canada used to have one and that was the first I had heard of them.
I was quite surprised at how many of them reached the Civilian market and how many are still flying.
It's a beautiful little aircraft.

One of the guys at my home field had one and was very surprised when I asked about it. "How'd you know what it is?"

That turned into an airplane ride. Except for the Experimental/Exhibition registration and the rules around that, it is an airplane that would be a better version of the Bonanza, at least for my use. Oh, and IIRC, it has a geared engine which is probably getting hard to support.

Turns out, it was this one:

I recall reading about one that crashed in Iceland ...or was it Greenland?... on a ferry flight to North America in the '70-80s.

That wasn't a Caidin/ME-108 story, was it?

It is actually a Piaggio design and they built around a third of the production run, Focke Wulf accounting for the rest.

A great looking aeroplane and I remember seeing OY-POT, D-EHJL and a number of other examples at events in the UK over the years.

Re the Iceland/Greenland prang, I know another Me108 (not the Caidin incident) was parked on the Greenland icesheet in the mid-60s. I used to slightly know a guy who was offered the chance to ferry it accompanied by another flown by Taffy Rich - my acquaintance was unable to take up the offer, much to his subsequent relief! The pilot was rescued unharmed.

No, it was a 149...at least according to the accounts I've read. And much later than Caidin's adventure.
I won't swear to it since I haven't seen it in person...

Is there some confusion here with the great Max Conrad's forced-landing on the edge of the Greenland Ice Cap in 1964? He was ferrying a Picchio to the US and had engine probs.

Peter Lert also crashed landed just after take-off from Narsarsuaq with an engine failure in a New Zealand registered SF-260 he was delivering to the US in 1988. Can't find any 149 accidents involving Atlantic ferry flights on ASN, though not everything is in their database and even if it is, my search parameters don't always find the accident I'm looking for!

There is a guy in Chino with three of them, all projects. Not sure even he knows the identity of any of them!
