B-36 stuff...anyone?

Sun Apr 18, 2021 6:53 pm

Just found those lovely.

Never seen the movie before...but I cannot even imagine the money (well) spent money on the movie!!! Nice to see in 4K!

And of course the Pima / Dallas bird story.

Sorry if you have seen....just wanted to share.

I just wish footage or photos would come to light of Paul Mantz’s B-25 camera ship (N1203) as it executed the formation takeoff with the B-36.

Funny you just mentioned......how was the takeoff sequence shot????

Clearly it is following on the left behind? A helicopter????

That is a 300' wide runway. The wheel track of the B-36 is 100' or less. So you position the B-36 75-100' towards the right side of the runway and the film aircraft (A B-25) has <effectively> a 100' runway of its own, and can overhang its left wing off the side of the runway to better keep out of the tip vortices.

Only problem is that it's not 300' wide, but only 200'. Been on it a number of times in both aircraft and trucks over the last 36 years.

Would you like to make a small wager on that? ;-)

Go to about 2:30 on the takeoff video. Notice that the runway is much wider than the B-36's span (which happens to be 230'). Now, estimate the actual width of the runway.

Was the opening sequence at Carswell? Cant view on my computer currently.

Camera ship on the parallel taxi way?

Ahh WiX...the perfect place for "discussions" about where someone parked an airplane in an emergency, wheel well paint color, and now runway widths! pop2

Yeah, it is Carswell. Lake Worth is in the background. My position would be that folks ought to be slower to disagree. I posted accurate information and someone had to come along and disagree, when the video is there for everyone to see. OK, everyone but you can see it. ;-)

It's probably just inflation, 300' in 1955 is only worth 200' in 2021.

Dimensions 11999 ft x 200 ft / 3657 m x 61 m

Looks like a B-24 on the runway.

Yep, 65 years later, they have narrowed it to 200' and extended it several thousand feet. Funny how things change over time.

When the movie was made in the 50's, as you can see from watching the video, the runway was a hundred feet wider. Check it out...

Here's a link to how the field looks (today) on google maps. If you check the paved width of the runway, it is 300'. They have painted edge markers at 200' wide in the 67 years since Strategic Air Command was filmed.

So, it was narrow, then it was wide, then it was narrowed again? :D

Do you think they widened the runway first and then built a plane to fit the runway or did they build the plane first and then widened the runway to fit the plane?

Since the length and width are given in meters along side the length and width in feet, why isn't the elevation given in meters also? Is this a gradual change to the metric system?
