From Mark Coombs
Hawker Tempest II MW763 G-TEMT
"First roll out of G-TEMT, owned by Anglia Aircraft Restorations, coming to the end of restoration and now only waiting for completion of the Bristol Centaurus VI engine.
The scheme is that of 33 Sqdn as worn in Malaya in the 1950’s
We hope you like it!"

It is absolutely stunning, and I had been highly anticipating the day that it would be revealed. Following quemerford's post, just so everyone knows, this is a Tempest II, and as such the Centaurus VI variant engine installed is accurate/correct for the type. Last I heard, there is one part they are waiting on for the engine. With Flying Legends taking place at Sywell this summer, home to Air Leasing where the Tempest has been under restoration, I hope that it may be ready in-time and might participate in some of the flying.

Beautiful!! She will look and sound amazing when she flies, looking forward to it.

The Tempest Mk. numbers are a little confusing at first glance, the first in service was the Mk.V with the Sabre engine. It took longer for the Mk.II to enter production (Centaurus development took time) and none saw combat during WW2, but these radial Tempests gave widespread service post-war both with the RAF and other air arms. This particular Tempest is ex-Indian AF, India being the main source of Tempest projects.

Closer to a Sea Fury than a Tempest V, IMO. Stunning restoration nevertheless.

Off to WIX jail now.

Not being up on British aircraft I thought it was a Sea Fury.

A very different aeroplane from a Sea Fury.

The Tempest has a tube-frame cockpit section, similar to the Hurricane and earlier Hawker biplanes, the Fury was all-monocoque. The Tempest also had a larger-span wing.

The differences are subtle, and a lot of them are under the skin, but as has been mentioned the Tempest is a different stage in the Typhoon to Sea Fury development line. For me, the main differences are in the tail section (much closer to the Typhoon shape-wise), wings and I think that the cockpit is set slightly higher in the Sea Fury. You have to park the two next to each other to really show these points. I walked past a 'Sea Fury' at Sun 'n Fun once, only to realise that it was Kermit Weeks' Tempest!

I did the same thing! Was sort of like, "Wow, a 4-bladed Sea Fury that turns 'backwards'. Can't be a 3350"

I hope they have the Typhoon tail flutter issues ironed out.

As others have said, whilst the SeaFury did start life as a version of the Tempest (it was known as the Light-weight Tempest initially), the SeaFury ended up being very different. The Tempest is much closer to the Typhoon, in concept it's basically a Typhoon with a new wing. The prototype Tempest even had the early car-door style Typhoon cockpit.

Regards tail-flutter, the Tempest had an increased span tail plane with a different thickness/chord ratio which eliminated the Typhoon tail flutter problem. The Tempest also had a much improved rear fuse/ tail unit joint which was much stronger.

As an aside, the airworthy Typhoon project in Canada is going to use the Tempest style tail joint as a safety measure.
