P-38's NASAF-5W 6-4-43 ... ?

Tue Sep 07, 2021 7:05 pm

Photos only state: "Chateau Dun. 1FG (NASAF-5W) 6-4-43".

Any ideas? Stateside training? North Africa? Can make out what looks to be yellow bands around stars?

Well, for starters it looks like those photos are reversed. It also appears that they are 94th Fighter Squadron aircraft.

It's Chateaudun-du-Rhumel in Algeria. Used as a base for P-38s and B-17s (etc) prior to the invasions of Sicily and Italy.

It's too bad the resolution is too small to see if Jack Ilfrey's UN-O is in the pictures.
