Let's address what I said point by point.

1) Which of the flying warbirds, more specifically fighters, are combat veterans?

2) Of those, which ones haven't been rebuilt to a high degree?

3) Of the others (the ones that stand in for combat veterans), which ones haven't been rebuilt to a high degree?

For #3; ex-Clay Lacey N64CL, recently sold and sent to Fighter Rebuilders for 'refurbishment'.
The aircraft has never been crashed and this was its first time being taken apart and it is in excellent condition, just very very dirty inside. Even still had the 1940's fuel bladders.
It will get a some sheet metal changed, new wiring and bladders, ect, but will still be a complete original airframe.

Lon, do you know if N64CL will retain its colour scheme with the new owners? I like seeing Mustangs in civvies...

Too funny! I’m pretty sure this was a gag question, but it’s going on a full page of serious responses. I can just imagine some major resto shop turning down a full set of F-82 parts because the data plate was damaged beyond repair.

I’m firmly in the camp where a sky full of data plate rebuilds is at least as good as a museum full of combat veterans - even better on a nice clear day.

Just my humble opinion, though.

The restoration for Victoria Benzing is progressing nicely. The fuselage is already being stuffed.

Yes, Mrs. Benzing has committed to the Mustangs history.

One important thing to remember about "Data Plates" and restoration. New data plates have been added to aircraft that have had theirs missing or damaged. not that big of an issue.
Paperwork is more important than a data plate.
Entire aircraft have been built using the paperwork from a now gone, but former licensed flyer. This is especially true with former navy aircraft. Chain of ownership and provenance proof will allow you to get to keep your Navy aircraft. Without that, you don't stand a chance.
Paperwork!
