He might have made it had he not taken that little detour down the median leading to the wobbly takeoff. Scrubbing speed...bad juju.

"Arm chair expert here" I wonder if he actually walked his take off route? Very unstable the moment he left that car park.

Same reaction as a couple of ya'll...I am not a pilot and am not an aviation expert by any stretch...but, WTF was he thinking??? Or maybe he is the same as me??? Not a pilot or an aviation expert...did not have enough sense to just stop...or why try at all? How did he get permission to try this stunt? Vertdaferk?

Looks like they did a LOT more damage removing it from the scene than it had immediately after the crash.

I'm curious where he landed before the parade. Same stretch of road?

According to news reports he towed the aircraft to the parade location from the airport. Unfortunately he decided not to use that method to return it.

That link is not working. But here's a video showing the entire takeoff run and crash from a different angle than the video used by the media. In my non pilot opinion, it looks like he was hauling back on the stick way too early. He also ran off the road into the grass median before he got airborne.

I dont think that it is possible to make the damage worse than it already is.

Considering the amount of damage, and you can buy a nice older restoration Stearman for <$100k, I would think it's totaled.

What a breathtaking display of poor decision making.
