Looks like a T-6 more than an BT-13 or SNV

Correct me if I am wrong, but this image of an aircraft upside down underwater looks to me like the wing of a T-6 rather than a BT-13/SNV.

T-6 has squared off wingtips. These look too round.

The SNJ wing has 10 degrees of sweep on the leading edge, the snv does not. Its an SNJ.

I'll bet my bottom dollar (lake bottom!) that that is an SNJ. The curve of the right wing tip is caused by the shadow of the sound waves. Trailing of the wing edge is so straight, and it looks like you can see the fairing around the center section/outer wing panel joint.
My 2 cents. (cause that's all I have to bet on anything with!)

Maybe it's a Curtiss Seamew? Well then again maybe not...

I was thinking more along the lines of a Kingfisher with it's main float ripped off.

I swear those look like floats.

Just received a reply from the folks at innerspace, where I got the photo from, we are right, it is an SNJ-5, they goofed a little in identifying her.

I also asked them to see if they can look at the mystery "floats" on the wing tips too!

Does anyone know if floats were ever adapted to the Texans?

I guess I could see the need, to help train float plane pilots.

At least one T-6 was modified for floats in Korea. I've seen several photos of it with a Kingfisher style float arrangement in Republic of Korea markings.
I don't know of any others and it's been twenty years since I last saw the photo.

I was looking at the other Sonar images they had listed on the website. I had just read about this PB4Y2-1 Privateer the other day. It is listed on Joe Baughers website as crashed into Lake Washington not ditched. But I have to tell ya she looks remarkably intact. I know that there still non water logged Privateers to be purchased but I wish someone would recover her. What a Time Capsule.

Yes, but the engines were ripped from the fuse, from the information I saw. Ouch!

The inboard engines were ripped from her when the NAVY tried to lift #59695..

Hi all!

I was just looking at their site and ran across this,

Of interest was,

"Of the nine aircraft known to be in Lake Washington , Innerspace Exploration Team personnel were the first to discover six of them: F4F Wildcat, CB Republic, F6F Hellcat, SNV-2 Valiant, F4U Corsair, and this TBF-1 Avenger."

I know a Corsair was pulled out awhile back and the Privateer deal, but it is the first I've heard of a Hellcat. Is it still there?

I dunno Paul... you gotta be careful about sidescan images, the shadows play tricks.

When I saw the 2 images, I thought to myself why'd he land with the gear down?
'Course one could ask the same for the PB4Y-2...

As for the floats...I was thinking it was the trailing edge of the ailerons laying
over the wintips..I wonder what the current strength is like down there and
which way it flows in relation to the a/c?

I went digging and found more piccies, the elevator and tailwheel look wrong
for T-6/SNJ. I'll leave the ID to the more experienced...
