I know this one was damaged by a tornado when it was at Windsor Locks many years ago but, was the damage so extensive that it deserved being cut up?

I remember seeing it as a kid in the 90's/00's. To my eyes it wasn't that bad at the time. You would have expected someone to save the nose section at least. Sad end to an awesome aircraft.

Humm - interesting - the Hill AFB museum folks told us that they were going to save the cockpit section - guess not!

It is my understanding that they (the museum) are really trying to get the $$ together for a hangar to put thier B-29 and a few other outside display aircraft inside of.

Spitfires have been restored from less.... but I guess this type may have to 'mature' a bit more before it will be accepted as a warbird.

Joking aside, it is always a shame to see an airframe cut up, but we don't know the true state of the metal and the considerations that went into this decision.

Doesn't Hill have a complete B-47?

What about the ex-Plattsburgh..or was it Pease...ac?
The NMUSAF used it for parts, gave it to Ellsworth who then scrapped it.
Not a good way to treat a now rare aircraft.

From the pics in that GSA ad, looks like the just cut her up and pushed it into the dirt by the side of the museum. Wonder if the Smith and Edwards surplus folks in Ogden will try and get it? Or maybe they're not into that line of business anymore.

Sad to see it like that, agree with everyone saying it would have been nice if they saved the cockpit section. Although maybe it was too far gone.

For what it's worth, this has apparently been a long time coming. The B-47 was one of a 18 aircraft the museum mentioned wanting to remove from the collection back in 2014. The Museum of Aviation did the same thing a year earlier.


Castle is certainly trying to do that, so it wouldn't surprise me if Hill is as well. It's basically another version of what the Qantas Founders Museum did with their Airpark Roof - and the Museum of Flight's Aviation Pavilion before that.
