Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby Being Prepared to Ship

Mon Dec 06, 2021 2:38 pm

Big news from NMUSAF and NASM on B-17 "Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby."

National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution restoration crews begin to disassemble the Boeing B-17G Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby. Plans call for NASM to ship the aircraft in sections to Washington, D.C. from here at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.
In 1968 Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby was found abandoned in France, and the French government presented the airplane to the U.S. Air Force. In July 1978 the 512th Military Airlift Wing moved it to Dover Air Force Base, Del., for restoration by the volunteers of the 512th Antique Restoration Group. After a massive 10-year job of restoration to flying condition, the aircraft was flown to the museum in October 1988.

This is long overdue. Hopefully she will be reassembled and placed on display in a timely manner.

I think the plan is for this to go to a location near the SR-71.

Good news. Its been in storage at the NMUSAF for almost 4 years now so I hope it does go on display soon after it's arrival at the NASM.

Exciting to hear. I'm curious to see how the staff at NASM will handle Shoo Shoo Baby. With there near exacting standards, I wonder if they will attempt to display the aircraft in its new metal finish. I also hope with the eventual addition of the B-17 (and B-26) that the floor layout is moved around to better facilitate the flow of time periods: (i.e moving the JRS-1, SB2C and any other WWII aircraft over to that area, Constellation over to the Cold War side, etc).

SB2C is already in the WWII area, though not among freinds (next to Do.335, in front of Japanese a/c).

Too bad they won't be able to fly "SSB" from Wright-Patterson to Dulles.
But it will be good to have it on display again, especially at the Smithsonian.

I'd lay odds on "as-is" with a disclaimer at the bottom of the display sign ending in "in the future" or "as time permits".
