I'd bet money, that "canopy open and locked" is part of the pre take off checklist. You can close it after the gear is up and you are going through your post take off checks.

Those are terrific pics. I haven't seen that camera angle. Basically the pilots are taking off and banking left to join up with the Corsairs that took off in front of them. Canopy open sure looks cool.

the Navy took off with canopy open in the F9F, its to get out if you had to ditch.
