Photo states: "With wheels up and propeller bent, this Mitsubishi A6M Japanese Zero carrier-based fighter made its Fort Worth debut Tuesday in a tent just north of City Hall. The plane was shot down on Guadalcanal and is making a nation-wide tour under the auspices of the Marine Corps benefit fund for enlisted men. Note the machinegun still intact in the right wing. Photo series states: "Messerschmitt Bf-109E3 of 4./JG26 flown by Uffz. Horst Perez 'White 4'. On 30 September 1940, Horst Perez was supposed to be part of a bomber escort but either he or the bombers missed the rendezvous and, circling north of Eastbourne, his group of Bf-109's were attacked by Spitfires. Making for the coast, the Bf-109s were again intercepted and the cooling system in Perez aircraft was hit. The aircraft came down at East Dean with the undercarriage retracted and without any severe damage. Perez climbed from the cockpit and was shot and wounded in the jaw and hand. Once removed from the crash site, the aircraft was sent to Canada for display during 1941 before traveling to the USA, eventually returning to England some years later.
W.Nr. 1190 of 4./JG26 flown by Uffz. Horst Perez 'White 4' is a Battle of Britain veteran that survives to this day. It currently resides in the Imperial War Museum collection at Duxford, Cambridgeshire."

Thought that at first but Germany had absorbed Czechoslovakia in 1938, not much opportunity to rack up victories with that. But I thought Dutch insignia was the orange triangles at the time. IDK

The five kill markings belong to the aircraft's previous owner, Hptm. Karl Ebbighausen, who was KIA 16.08.40.

Ebbighausen's five confirmed kills: two Dutch - a Fokker T5 and a Fokker G1 on 13.05.40: One French - a Morane 406 on 18.05.40 and two British - a Spitfire on 24.05.40 and a Battle on 14.06.40.

Correct, the Dutch Air Force used the orange triangles at the time to avoid confusion. But only for a very short period (October 1939 to May 1940, a bit longer in the Far East) so it is not unrealistic to have a German pilot paint the Dutch roundel on his Bf109. There should be an orange circle in the centre of the roundel (the Czech one doesn't have that), but I guess at that size they may not have bothered including it, or it is too small and/or too close in colour to the rest of the roundel to spot on this photo.

Usually, you had to donate something to get this close to a war trophy during the war.
I can't imagine someone back then seeing something like that in person, in an era where you'd never think you'd get to see something from the war "across the waters", as the old folks called it where my parents were from, in the Blue Ridge area...

The '109 at Duxford still bears the names on its skin, despite receiving a nicely-painted colour scheme. Sadly this isn't quite the right area to make a direct comparison; it's just forward of the tailplane, right-hand side. I'd love to see if the names visible on the swastika are still visible too.
