I believe that the XVI was disposed of when the XI (being more representative of the versions operated by the USAAF than a low-back XVI) went on show in the mid-90s.

The V was added later as part of the B-24 exchange, as already mentioned.

At lease it didn't turn into a discussion on "Day of the Jackel"!

Sorry APG, that was my fault, but I couldn't resist!

44-51228 was apparently some type of research aircraft and by the original Lackland photos it appears that the turrets were NOT present. Further investigation alludes that all armament was removed and the turret openings were faired over.

HERE SHE IS:

Even though you Brits have her, she's still in a better place!

So yeah, where did IWM get those turrets from anyway? :o

t~

I agree, she's in a much better place....
I'd still like the inside scoop on the restoration. Is the interior complete or is she a gutted shell?

According to one of links that Mike provided, the flight deck is incomplete (ie, no seats, etc...)

The fiberglass replica is actually pretty convincing. When they popped the mold all of the imperfections stayed. Dings, dents, rivets, etc... It was painted with the same silver paint as the other aircraft that are on the parade ground, the average person wouldn't know its not the same aircraft that has been there all those years.

The last time I was at Lackland, the planes were clean and painted but were in pretty poor shape up close. The gun turrets on almost all of them were fakes - and not well done fakes at that. They would have been better off leaving the fake turrets off in my opinion. I hate seeing vintage aircraft sitting outside. The B-24 is much better off at Duxford.......
