Race gas at Reno

Tue Jun 20, 2006 11:55 pm

Is the race fuel (115/145?) used at Reno made specifically for Reno or is it made for other uses world wide and just some is brought into Reno? Any idea how many gallons and price per gallon?

Regards,
Mike

The VP fuel that is sold at Reno is a specific blend made for the races, called "VP Air Race" or something like that.

Not sure about the plain ol' "purple power" 115/145.

I think last year we paid around $4.75/gallon. The guys from VP always show up with a tanker or two, and last year told me that the actual octane was over 150 (they juice it a little for the racers). Also, at the end of race week if there's any left over they sell it to us for the same price as 100LL, which is nice for that first leg out of Reno.

Bad race fuel trashed several round engines several years ago, so it's nice that an operation like VP is there to make sure that never happens again. I have nothing but praise for these guys.

Thanks for the info. I have always wondered about it.
