That is the absolute worst place to ride on a tracked vehicle.

They were known to throw people off the drivers seat if you attempted *spirited* turning.

Think of the direction he would likely fall..... I've been restoring and driving tanks and other tracked vehicles for many years and would never let somebody ride there on one of mine.

My best guess is that the second person was there as another pair of eyes, somewhat in front of the dust thrown up by the tracks. Kind of like the guys that sat on the wing of Corsairs and other conventional gear fighters on the dusty Pacific island bases as they taxied out to the runway.
