After leaving Dunnville I was off to Niagara Falls to attend the Friendly Foes Over the Falls air show…

There were many Canadian related historic aircraft on static display with some giving rides. The flying displays were also quite enjoyable, but the gusty winds kept some planes on the ground. Once again the crowds were kept well away from the aircraft, something that doesn’t seem to be a problem with other shows in Canada (Carp for example). There is a bright side to this though… you won’t have a bunch of people getting in your way for pictures! The only major gripe I had about the show was the website that advertised flying would start at 10 AM and end at 2 PM. Flying didn’t start until 1:30 PM. So if you had plans for late afternoon you were forced to throw them out the window or lose your $15 admission fee. The other problem with this late start time is that it ensured you would be looking into the sun for most of the flying. The flying however was most enjoyable, the highlight of the show being the Great War Flying Museum’s WWI replicas. This was my first air show with my new camera and lens. Threw away most of the pictures, but for the pictures I figured were decent enough to present visit…

When the B-17 got stuck on the runway at Friendly Foes show I called it quits and left on the last leg of my road trip home. I didn’t head home right away, but still had a few more stops, the first being a pole mounted Silver Star in Fort Erie…
Image
This is the same Silver Star that was once mounted on a pole in a business park in Mississauga (Toronto). One other piece of trivia worth noting is this a composite airframe. The front end is from Silver Star 21373/133373 and the back end is from 21512/133512. The front end of 133512 is apparently with the Valiant Air Command in Tittusville, FL. For more pictures visit…

I had one more stop to make and that was the Naval Park in Buffalo, NY…
Image
The website advertised they had a number of airframes on display including a Bell P-39 Airacobra. I was completed pumped for a nice visit and a chance to see such a rare airframe. Unfortunately reality was they were undergoing construction, and most of the airframes had been moved offsite into a warehouse. The only airframes in view was the F-101 and the UH-1, and even then that was from a good distance away in the middle of a construction zone and through a fence. I did manage to get one picture of the Voodoo and Iroquois. I also snapped a few shots of the ships tied up to the dock. To see the pictures of the ships visit…

That was it for the road trip. Pictures from Vintage Wings and the Air Show Ottawa are next.

Mike

As you could see, the Naval Park is currently undergoing a major construction project. They have removed their old museum building and will be constructing a much nicer looking one in the near future. They already have the annex space constructed (the red building near the ships). The ships were moved a few years ago to their current place and have a pretty nice park area around them now.

I've been pretty impressed with the improvements to the Naval park over the last few years and I'm looking forward to them getting a new building. This project is also occuring in conjunction with the restoration of the original Erie Canal terminus.
