Cathedral Term

Mon Sep 30, 2024 3:32 pm

Has anyone ever encountered the term "cathedral" used to refer to anhedral? A bunch of the 3-view drawings from Republic - F-84F, RF-84F, YF-105A, F-105B, F-105F - have it. However, since that's the only place I've ever seen it and all of the aforementioned drawings are similar style and arrangement – suggesting they were drawn by a single person – I'm inclined to attribute it to one draftsman's personal proclivities. Perhaps he previously worked in architectural drafting and he brought the term with him?

Yes - it's strange but I recall seeing it referring to the F-4 tailplane, also an early missile though I forget which.

EDIT: found it!! North American Aviation used it to refer to the anhedral drop tank fins added to its first 120-gallon tank and AMC replies also use the term. This would be circa 1948/49.
