Just pickin' nits here...44-74445 isn't a Cavalier, but an Aero Enterprises Mustang, which was a similar-looking "sport aircraft" conversion.

Randy this may have been asked before but I gotta know ; Just what is a Nit and why would you wanta pick one ? :lol:

Also just found this additional info about Jr. Burchinal's current status. It was also on WIX.

Art Lacey's B-17G should rank up there with George Maude's P-40; and Art did fly it - once.

Walt Ohlerich has owned and flown his SNJ-5 for more than forty years... that's quite a haul too.

My apologies for "doing in" Mr Burchinal prematurely like that. Very odd that I remember reading about his having passed on in one of the magazines. Obviously it was someone else! Now I wonder who. Glad to hear Mr Burchinal is still about and on the go. Thanx much for correcting me...

According to Scott Thompson's authoritative work "Final Cut", on page 183 is the true story of the final flight of B17 44-85790 now "flying" on Pylons in front of The Bomber Restaurant in Milwaukie, OR.

The late Mr. Lacey did not fly this B17 from storage, but he certainly told a very colorful story (perpetuated on the Bomber Restaurant web site) of a flight at tree-top level in the teeth of a blinding snowstorm.

The Pilots for the actual flight were veteran warbird pilots Bob Sturges and George Fuller.

Mr. Lacey's ownership is also not so clear, but apparently "possession is 9/10ths of the law", as they say and the B17 continues to "fly" on its pylons to this day, since sometime in 1947.

There is much more to this story and I refer you to Scott's book for all the details.

And Thank-you Scott for your book and your web site (www.aerovintage.com): the book started me on my Warbird way, whcih eventually led me to WIX. :wink:

My dad (john paul) has had his P-40E AK944 since 1966 and has been flying it to this day since he restored and first flew it in 1970. I'm certain that there is nobody alive that has been flying P-40's longer than that.
