Here is a sampling of pictures of my trip to Nashville TN. As you will notice I also took a trip to Kentucky, Knoxville area, and the greater Atlanta area.

First is my trip to The Lost Squadron Museum. I had great tour and Bob and Jeff where very friendly and helped me enjoy my time there very much. We also had the pleasure of watching a Tiger Moth take off on its way to Canada to a new owner. Does anyone know who is receiving this aircraft? It looked great. Glacier Girl looked incredible, really unbelievable the work that was put into it and the quality of workmanship. If you have not been and have been thinking of going YOU NEED TOO GO. If you have not been wanting to go, why are you on WIX?

Next stop was the Tennessee Air Museum. This was not disappointing in the least. Where else can you see 2 ¼ P-47s in the same hanger? Speaking of that P-47 wreckage does anyone know the Serial number of it and what model it is?

Does anyone know what the ID is for this B-25 nose?

For the weekend I went to see my Brother that lives south of Atlanta and decided to take the chance to stop and check out the B-29 that is at Dobbins ARB just north of Atlanta. I thought it was publicly accessible but it is not. But I found out I can run across a four lane highway better than a french in my control in some video game. So there I stood next to the fence trying to get good shots holding my camera above the barbed wire. I was also very thankful the fence was not electric. After running back across the highway I was able to joke about not getting hit in full view of Kelly, she did not find that very funny.

Next stop was to the CAF Dixie Wing. This was also a great tour. It is starting to get very rare that I can say I saw something brand new that I have not seen before, this time was a Soko 522. It was also very nice to get to see the P-63A that is being restored. I hope someday to have the pleasure of seeing that take to the air. The SNJ-4 that is nearing the end of restoration is looking great. I was hoping that the SBD-5 was going to be there but it was not,. Maybe next time!

Anyone know what this is? And what is the serial number for it?

That is all the a/c related stuff, besides the F-86l in the Nashville park. I will be posting some shots of Stones River National Battle Field soon also.

Than on to getting some Geneseo Airshow pitures posted.

Nice Shots Tim, The bottom aircraft looks to be an Aeronca..maybe a Champ, L-2. Did I hear right that Niel Melton is having another 47 rebuilt by Klears?

Looks like you had quite a trip Tim, thanks for sharing it with us.

That Mohawk sure gets around, I photographed it at American Wings a few years ago. Interestingly enough, that makes two CAF units with a Mohawk on display. 69-10721 is on display at the Lake Superior Squadron hangar in Duluth.

I don't know the serial number but took this shot of the placard that is next to the wreck.

This one is next to the engine. They are from two separate aircraft, and are "on loan from West Pac Restorations."

I'll be back there next week...I'll see if there is anything more specific about that B-25 nose section. Supposedly it saw some use in the movies but they are still trying to determine its history.

THUNDERBOLT UPDATE
Air Classics, Jul 2004

Latest news from WestPac Restorations

We have been informed by Bill Klaers of WestPac Restorations that a restored P-47D will be returned for museum exhibition in Australia. The Thunderbolt was pivotal in keeping the Japanese out of Australia so it is fitting that a restored example will be on display for all to see. WestPac has developed a reputation for extremely authentic restorations and their magnificent P-51D Mustang has recently been unveiled to the public at Paul Alien's new aviation museum in Arlington, Washington. "We hope there are enough remaining parts from the three recovered fuselages to produce another aircraft," said Bill.

We made the mistake of stating that current Thunderbolt owner Neal Melton had obtained one of the hulks. Neal has expressed interest in perhaps getting one of the aircraft depending on what is left over from the museum restoration.

Tim, The aircraft in the last picture I believe is an Air-Knocker L-16A. Tho I still am a member, but not involved with The Dixie Wing, I am very proud of the positive accomplishiments made & in the works these folks have done/are doing, as I was one of folks that got together & got this Wing started. I am sorry I couldn't give you a holler & get together while you were here, as I am on the mend from some recent surgery. Maby next time. Thanks for posting the great pics from your trip.
Best Regards

The Stop at the CAF wing was a very quick one; I was on my way to see my brothers, whom I had not seen in over 1 year, the other almost 2 years. So next time I will try and give some notice. Hope you recover quickly! Thanks for the info!

Tim

Tim,

Sorry you were unable to get to see Sweet Eloise up close. When I worked at NAS Atlanta (thru June of 2001) the area around the plane was outside the base fence, and you could park in a small lot south of the aircraft and walk right up to it. I guess the new anti-terrorism requirements put the quietus on that.
