Which F6F survivors book do you have Rob? I've not come across one before (other than survivors listings in Barrett Tillman's book and the current Flight Journal special on the F6F)

Dick Phillips, civil P-51 historian, is also working on a Mustang related project; it will contain in-depth information on all P-51's ever to appear on civil registers, of course with loads of photographs never seen before.

I'm eagerly awaiting this one. It was 'close to being finished' when I spoke to Dick about it at Oshkosh in 1988. Hopefully, it's a little 'closer' by now.

well, you know Mike -

some projects are pretty reluctant to go beyond the project stage - I haven't read from Dick for quite a while but I am sure he is doing his utmost to bring his one into fruitation.


Since I am working on a Mustang book project, too (History of the Swiss AF Mustangs 1948 - 1958, including all the former identities and wartime action of each a/c, plus their duty in occupied Germany 1945 - 1947) - I can say that there always comes in another bit of information or that long sought after photograph, that confirms or denies a particular fact, or even triggers some additional (sometimes arduous) research, which has impact on the whole project itself or part thereof.... sometimes a vicious circle...

...and then there are other activities and projects that pop up in between which may distract from the main issue (project) - and all this besides a 100 % job, family, etc...

So any book-project needs to be tagged with the label "It's done when it's done".

I'll just add that my book project also will be a de-facto "survivors" book as well, since I'll outline the general histories of the Cavalier built/modified airframes by serial number and what their fates are (if known).

Didn't I read in in one of the Warbird Digests that Tim and company are going to be publishing some Survivor's books starting with the beloved P-47 Thunderbolt?

In seeing what Dick has prepared for this, I'd venture that the research and cross-referencing is probably 90% there, but it's that extra step to a full-blown and polished reference book that's still to be accomplished.

I'd like to see it finished, too....hell, I still have to manange to finish my own book around a busy military flying schedule and an upcoming move from the US to Europe!

I'd love to do something on CCF built Hurricanes, but Hurricanes survivors really are amorphous. Outside of the flyers and static examples, it is hard to know just how many frames survive.
