Here's a shot my step-dad took while flying A-6Es with VA-75 in the late 70 s in the Med. Station 1 has a MER and station 2 has a drop tank but what's that on station 3 (centerline). Hint, I could tell ya but then i'd have to kill'ya.

Naw, even a Skyraider can do it. You pop up and get altitutde, then dive, pull up at the bottom of the dive and as you go vertical you release the nuke in a lobbing arc. You continue to pull back and when your inverted you roll over and boogie for home. At least thats what I did last time I nuked someone in a sim. :)

Hey, it's faster than the other two aircraft that have dropped nuclear weapons in combat (e.g. B-29s).

Contrary to popular belief, aircraft don't have to be extremely fast to drop a nuclear freefall bomb from medium altitude. The wicked shockwave effects that you see in the movies are a result of the blast front reflecting off the ground and creating something called a mach stem.

That mach stem doesn't exist up at altitude. Without getting into specific numbers, delivery aircraft won't have any problems with that blast front at altitude.

The loft technique that Scott mentioned (or you can subsitute that delivery for just being able to haul ass, like a F-111) is only needed if the bomb is going to be delivered at low altitude.

With respect to the A-6 picture...it doesn't look like a B43 or B57 bomb, which were the primary n-word bombs that the Navy used. So my vote is with the Pave Knife pod, Pave Spike, or some version of that.
