Amazing SBD CV Landing Accident!!!

Mon Jul 24, 2006 6:41 pm

Here's a amazing shot of a VERY hard landing by a SBD-3 on the USS Yorktown just prior to the Battle of the Coral Sea. The gunner was shacken up pretty back & the pilot, who broke his back, was so incapacitated that he couldn't even pull the mixture to idle cutoff! Note the impact point and the multiple prop strikes on the flight deck plus the fact that the aircraft is broken in half!!

Hi Jack... what always amazes me about the photographs that you post is not just that they are often of very high quality, and also largely unpublished, but that you also know the stories that go along with each of them. That really is quite something. If you aren't working on a book, then you should be. Bravo for your efforts, and thanks very much for sharing them.

Cheers,
Richard

What's really amazing is that I have enough unused brain cells left to actually function at work!

You should try working for yourself! It is quite a rude awakening!

Jack, do you have any shots of the VFM-452 in Corsairs? My uncle was in that unit. Baxter Little,
in the book Above and Beyond, he and his wing man were the ones that buzzed the B-24 base, inverted 8)

TIA,

Lynn
