Lightning II sucks (what would they have called the X-32?), but really gets me is that it'll be the F-35 (think we skipped a few numbers there, unless there are an awful lot of fighters I've never heard of)

The Saudis would be unimpressed if you suggested that.

Oh, did some other country score some kills and give the credit to the Saudis in the Lightning, too?

Let's kiss everybody's tushy while we're at it!

Anybody else with a "Lightning" in their inventory (restricted to known or potential buying countries only, please)?

And yes, Lightning II better friggin' refer to the friggin' P-38! A Lockheed product named "Lightning II" after a Brit jet? I'll guarantee if Kelly Johnson or Ben Rich were still alive with a few marbles that sheet would never fly!

If and when I ever do an F-35 painting, I'll burn the fugger before I allow prints to be published saying something like:

This jet is named after this plane, that plane, that jet - what? Oh, OK, well yes, we've added another country to our list of buyers - their "Lightning" as well - the best of it's time!"

As others have said, a totally and completely gutless and un-original "safe" choice. Way to go, Lockluster!

Sheesh!

Do tell. Are you referring to victories in the Fox-One-Five credited to the Saudis?

No, the Saudis used Lightnings successfully against Yemeni ground forces in 1969. Sorry if that's inconvenient for your prejudices though.

Thanks very much, but no prejudices here. It's a fact that some of the kills claimed by the RSAF F-15s in Desert Storm were, shall we say, "heavily assisted" by US pilots and AWACS.

Why not call it the BMF?

It is not the name, but what the airplane does, what matters, right?

They can call it the Pink Platypus, for all I care. When it goes and kicks *ss, the name will mean nuthin'!

Saludos,

Tulio

If you want a new plane that will kick ass that would be the F-22 not the JSF.

I wasn't aware that the nationality of the AWACS that pointed you towards your target had any bearing on your claim of the kill. Still, at least the Saudis haven't shot down any friendlies in their F-15s, eh.

None of this, of course, has anything to do with their combat record in the 1960s with Lightnings, and that is why I made the remark about your prejudices.

MODS: Sorry, I self-moderated this post after posting it. I deleted my childish, off-topic, argumentative post. I'm gonna take the high road on this one, with one exception, where I've been accused of something I'm not:

You mean, that's why you accused me of having some kind of prejudice. Hate to get technical here, but prejudice means "forming a judgment without direct experience".

Not sure how much experience you've had to fly with RSAF fighter pilots, but I have. My comments were based on my personal experience from actually flying, interacting, and debriefing with them in the F-15.

Now, I wasn't there during Desert Storm, but I know the guys who were, and based on their firsthand reports along with my personal experience I formed my opinion. I was also not there flying Lightnings in the 1960s, so take it for what it's worth.
