WIX Technology exchange / Co-op?

Over the last couple years, Yankee Air Museum has made a pretty big transition in terms of its computer & IT situation. (And all it took was a bunch of 14 hour days and a hangar-destroying fire.....)

Now that we're up and running at a comfortable level, my cohorts and I find ourselves somewhat flush with equipment. We're getting ready to retire some gear and we've got other stuff that are going to be stripped for parts. Rather than just dumpster stuff that is serviceable, or let it gather dust in a drawer, we've been talking about trying to assist other, similar organizations.

So, what I'd like to do is find out if there are any folks that are either managing (or who are in touch with those who are managing) the IT areas of other aviation museums / warbird organizations that could use equipment or assistance. I know this is a definite niche, but we've done a lot of good at Yankee, and I'd like to try and spread some of the wealth. In addition, maybe there are folks interested in getting an organization dragged into this century but don't know who/where to get started, so here would be a good place to ask for help. We've also found some really good resources for non-profits.

There are a lot of things to work out (shipping, determining needs, etc.), but I figured I've gotta start somewhere.

And besides, why should the B-17 co-op have all the fun? :D

Phill: If you are talking about generic computer equipment, then you are much better off finding a local organization that has the need. Shipping monitors and CPU's cross country, unless they are superspecialty items, is pretty much a waste of $'s.

We had a major player in the computer recycling business near by and it go to be so bad that they were paying $25 for 18 month old laptops and having a hard time selling them for $100. The last batch of computers that Dad and I took over there didn't even make us enough money for the gas it took to drive over there.

I knew shipping would be the biggest issue as far as equipment, but I figured I'd throw this idea against the wall and see what sticks.

I am looking at upgrading our server for our research website.

If your looking to donate something to our researh cause, could you send me a listing if what you have to see if it matches our needs?

Any equipment sent would be greatly appricated. And of course, a link on our site on the front page would be in order for the donation.

Thank you
