Northrop F-89C Scorpions photos

[T33driver]

These are shots my dad took in the early to mid 1950s while a Radar Observer or R/O (today's Weapon System Officer or USN Radar Intercept Officer) in the USAF's Air Defense Command. In 1952, was assigned to the 433rd Fighter Interceptor Squadron "Satan's Angel's" at Truax Fld Madison WI then transferred in 1954 to Ladd AFB (now Ft Wainright) in Fairbanks Alaska. Today he flies T-33 sorties with me, giving me good backseater feedback. Enjoy...

Those are some fine pictures.The F-89 has always been one of my favorite airplanes.My mother worked at Hanscom Field in Massachusetts in the late 50's and would sometimes take me to the technical library to read some facinating books.

A detatchment of F-89's worked out of the base.What I most remember about them was the impressive amount of noise that they could create while in afterburner.

I've worked out of Ft. Wainwright with air tankers.The runways are none too long.It looks like paying attention to the stop sign on the airport road would have been a good idea.

Nice pix! Thanks very much for sharing. I just got back from Fairbanks myself, although I was working at Eielson AFB just down the road. That does look like a short runway!

Fan-freaking-TASTIC shots!!! I've got a real soft spot for the big ol' Scorpion... there's an F-89J at Air Power Park in Hampton that I used to crawl all over when I was a kid. Managed to get into the cockpit one time- boy, that was a big climb when you're only 12!

Thanks for the kind feedback everyone! My dad seemed to have the touch 50+ years ago with the classic 35mm Kodachrome. These were originally color slides and I must have projected them on the big screen hundreds of times since I was a kid. Thanks Henning for prompting me to post the pics! Maybe I'll dig up a few more and get him to tell his blown canopy story in the dead of Alaska winter...
