Well, I replaced my dead scanner... so I'll be posting some photos from my collection.

To start with, I'll share what I have on the Northrop N-3PB.

Here's the only shot I have showing one of these birds in its original Norwegian markings.
The rest of the wartime shots show these aircraft while serving with 330 Sqn in Iceland.

Image

I've also got some photos showing the recovery and restoration of the example that was
recovered from the Thjorsa river in Iceland during the late 70s. I'll be posting those next,
then the wartime shots.

When I was a kid, I used to read the "Reader's Digest" and eventually I managed to acquire som issues dating back to WW-II.

I distinctly recall an add by Northrop with the leading:

"Norwegian Eagles"

that was the first time I saw the N-3PB and looked like a real cool airplane.

I wish that I had saved that ad!

Saludos,

Tulio

There is only one left of the type in the whole world, it is at the Musuem at Gardemoen Airport in Oslo Norway.

From what I can remember is it was actually flying from its base to another to be briken up  But bad weather forced the pilots to make an emergency landing witch resulted in the crash and sinking of the plane. Both crew survived :D It was a lucky thing that they crashed otherwise there would not be any left. :D

I seem to remember that the remains of another N-3PB were located recently in Iceland, or Norway. I do not know what they consist of, or if they are to be recovered though.

Cheers,
Richard

Here are the recovery, restoration and 'reveal' photos I have. These are all Northrop prints, circa the early 80s.

My class at the Northrop University A&P school replaced the fabric on the rudder for the N-3PB in 1980. My first warbird involvement!

Did that originally have a Hydromatic as in the modern photos or did it originally have a counterweight prop?

One more bird in Reykjavik Richard..there are plans to recover her....

"Sonar Images of WW 2 Northrop N-3PB
Reykjavik, March 2006

Recently, a Gavia AUV on a training mission took the first side scan sonar images of a rare Northrop N-3PB seaplane that crashed just short of Reykjavik airport during the Second World War. N-3PB patrol bombers in Reykjavík were operated against German U-boats by the Norwegian 330 Squadron of the RAF.

Commissioned by the Royal Norwegian Air Force in 1940 for coastal defence, the N-3PB was the first aircraft designed and produced by the newly founded Northrop Aircraft, Inc. The position of this second known surviving N-3PB aircraft was supplied by the Icelandic Coast Guard and it is located in a protected area as the airplane is believed to contain unexploded ordinance onboard according to this article. The Gavia was equipped with the Marine Sonic 900 / 1800 kHz SSS. Click on the image for a larger view."

Peter, thank-you for this excellent thread and SUPERB photos. I am a big
fan of Jack Northrop's design-savvy and genius!!!

Erik H, GREAT snaps from Gardemoen!!!

Eric H....

Tks for sharing the pics on the Northrop. 8)

But I have to ask.

Do you have any of the He-111 at the museum you could share with us ?

We rarely see pics of it on the net.

I have a beautiful one at home when it was hauled outside on a sunny day.
