T-6s are great but.......
nothing beats a Stearman flight down the Willamette Valley here on a cool summer evening watching the scenery go by at 100'. Ok except maybe blasting down the coastline in the B-25 on the deck just off the beach!

Another plus for the T-6 is you can still pick up the phone (or
send an e-mail) and buy darned near every part number
in the parts book NOS.

Just got back from the National Stearman Fly-In in Galesburg, IL; 120+ Stearmans, plus their bigger brothers. Watching a Stearman on final, followed by a T-6, and then by a P-51, one gets a sense of the progression that a new cadet went threw in an incredibly short time.

For me, the T-6 wins hands down because of my love for the era. Having flown a T-28, I have a great respect for the performance, but it is a jet trainer - as was the intention.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the T28 is a lot better than pretty much every other aircraft ever made. Especially the T6.
:D

T-6 hands down, you have to fly it, and real pilots don't need a training wheel.

At OSH a couple of years ago Randy Sohn said "the T-6 is a terrible airplane which makes it a great trainer and a T-28 is a great airplane which makes it a terrible trainer."

The late Bob Love said "first you start with the P-47, then the P-51, the the P-40, after that you can handle the terrible Texan, but the USAAF did it the other way around."

:D Thank for all the responses.. Its pretty much a 50-50 split isn't it..

Keeping in mind the point and what all you guys pointed out the T-6 does make better sense for me from a restoration point of view.. with parts and simpler engines etc..

but WOW  does the T-28 look MEAN or what!!

like suggested i'll probably have a test ride and look more into the manuals etc before i do anything..

AHHHHHH the sound of that 1820!!!, the only thing that makes it better is when there is two of them on one airframe (S-2). I also do like the T-6, if you want one that will kick a little butt, build one with a geared 1340 and a 3 blade prop! Now that will even make some of the T-28 crowd a little nervous. I think either way you'll not be disappointed. One more thing the T-6 will teach you what your feet are for!

Little Known Reasons To Buy A T-28: 1. You need to carry a couple of bags of golf clubs in the luggage. 2. Your girlfriend weighs over 200 lbs. 3. You love to wipe off oil and exhaust stains 4. You think your car sounds best with 1/2 the spark plugs disconnected and a hole in the muffler 5. Someone convinced you a tailwheel airplane is hard to fly. 6. You own stock in an oil company 7.You hope to trade up to a Skyraider

Heheheee :D , Bill is right. I would like to, not nessesarily refute his claim, but provide a more accurate account of the 7 reasons, in the interest of science, of course......

1. In the words of the great Larry Shapiro, when he was trying to sell me a Bulldog, "Look back here! It's great! Plenty of room for your weed and guns!" The T28 has ten times that space. And isn't that what it's all about, Weed, Guns, Flying, and America? I get teary eyed thinking about it. Ohh say can you seeee....

2. If you can't climb up there, you can't fly. I've seen dudes that were taller laying down than standing up make it up the flaps. And chicks who have achieved the perfect shape, completely round, make it up there. No namby pamby watch where you step, "It might break, ohhhhh". If you can get your Carl's Juniour eating self up there, you can fly. Besides, Fat chicks are fun and they always have a hot friend.

3. When North American chose the engine for the best plane ever made, They had three questions. They were,,,,
A. Does this engine kick serious @ss? A=yes
B. Does this engine provide a protective coating to the aircraft? A=yes
C. Does the protective coating make the airplane more aerodynamic? A=yes
I have provided a conclusive example of this in the picture below.(Dan's probably gonna kick my a$$ for posting that)(That is one of my favorite pictures, Pure T28B Baybay!)

4. The best sound ever made. You can hear it from 10 miles away. It says one thing. Trouble is coming to town.

5. Why make life harder on yourself? I'm not saying that anyone shouldn't be a T-6 master (I will be one myself one of these decades), buttt, if you're flying it every weekend, and it is your only plane, wouldn't it be better to kick a$$, than be learing to kick a$$ every weekend?

6. If a gallon of 100LL a minute spooks you, then come on back to the 172. We'll do lunch at Auburn. It'll just take us an hour to get there.

7. Yes. That is the natural progression. T-28, Skyraider, A6. Anything else is blasphemy.
